From M6: Exit M6 Junction 40, taking the A66 towards Keswick/Workington. This is the most direct route avoiding the Lakes tourist routes. This route also by-passes the towns of Penrith, Keswick and Cockermouth.

Alternative scenic route: Exit M6 Junction 36. Take the A590 Kendal bypass then A591 to Windermere and Keswick and A66 from Keswick to Cockermouth. This is a scenic route through the Lake District but there can be traffic congestion during the holiday season.

Then: Immediately south of Cockermouth, take the A595 to Whitehaven. After the Lillyhall roundabout and dual carriageway, take the bypass road at the next roundabout (second exit) to Whitehaven avoiding Distington. Approaching Whitehaven, do not go into the town centre, follow the A595 (Loop Road) through two sets of traffic lights and take the second left at the roundabout at the bottom of Homewood Hill (signposted West Cumberland Hospital).
